11:28 am: Your weekly WTF
Powerslave, good heavy metal band.  Godslave, just plain wrong.

Kenaz Filan:
You identify as a Godslave: this triggers a lot of people. They are terrified at the idea that a God might claim them or force them to do something without their consent. Could you talk a bit about what "Godslave" means and how being a Godslave effects your life?

It defines my life. Every blessing that I have, and I have been gifted with many, has come to me as a result of my service. You do the work and the Gods will pour blessings in to your hands. At the same time: where I work, what I do, where I live, whether or not I can have any particular partner, sometimes what I eat and drink and wear are all dictated to me. How much sleep I get, and what friends I may have are impacted by Odin’s ownership of me. How I spend my money falls under a powerful taboo too. I am held to an extremely high standard by my Gods. Furthermore, if anyone or anything in my personal life interferes with that relationship, with my service to Him, they do not long remain in my life.

It's truly disturbing. I could replace Odin with Christ and the above paragraph maintains it's same fanatical and insane character, while changing nothing. It really defies most of the central tenants of Paganism: free will, self-determination, freedom, choice and responsibility. It's pretty sickening.

I imagine Odhin's reaction to all this as being something like the Goblin King's in Labyrinth: "I am exhausted from living up to your expectations." Doesn't she think gods have something better to do than micromanage her life?

Wow, notice there's an entire series of interviews? Could just as easily be discussions about Islam, whose central tenet is submission to higher power.

It always amuses me that brides of Odin fail to grasp the paradox inherent in proclaiming their special status as slavish devotees to a particular god while at the same time seeking approval by and inclusion in the mainstream heathen community. Then of course, failing to gain that acceptance they proceed to bitch how everyone else is shallow and ignorant.
